July 2014 Net Worth Update (-0.69%)

Aug 05, 2014 @ 06:13 pm by EMS

Between a number of unscheduled distant trips, childcare, and some unexpected home repairs, July 2014 ended up being the most expensive month that we’ve had in years (note: I’m excluding large months in which we had large one-time scheduled purchases such as the solar panel installation).  We noticed early in the summer that our skylights had developed a leak and being that they have reached the end of their 20-year lifespan, we decided to have them replaced.  Unfortunately, it seems as skylight installers are few and far between (at least around here), and it is about twice as expensive as I thought it would (or should be).  We paid a deposit to the installers this month, and the main installation will be next month, so it will be another expensive month.  Unfortunately, we’ve dipped into the “emergency fund” already, and this will nearly deplete the readily-available portion of our emergency fund.  I guess it is better than taking out a loan or waking up to a huge water leak though!

Of course, the market was down this month, and that affected the bottom line as well.

We will be tightening up the belts here a bit until we replenish the emergency fund…
