October 2012 Investment Comparison Report (-2.85%)

As expected our portfolio in October lagged considerably from our benchmark, VTI.  Our shares in Apple really sunk the ship over the month, as it tanked quite a bit.  I still believe long-term in the company though and if I had some cash readily availiable, I’d probably purchase some more of it here in the $500 – $600 range.

October 2012 Net Worth Update (-1.00%)

Nov 01, 2012 @ 10:18 am by EMS

October marked our first loss in net worth since May.  We were down $3,386 due mostly to our losses in our Roth IRAs.  We hold a comparatively sizable stake in Apple, which had a very bad month, ending down 15%.  Our spending was a bit higher than I anticipated, although the month was one of our less expensive months of the year so far.

We do have one large expense coming up.  We will likely need a new van before too much longer.  Our 2004 Mazda MPV with over 160,000 miles has been a tank, but is finally showing signs of needing replacement.  Two years ago, we recognized the need and began saving up a $5,000 down payment for a new vehicle to be purchased in late 2012.  Since then, we made the decision to keep the MPV until it absolutely gets to the point where repairs don’t make sense economically and hoped that would get us into early 2013.  Just last night, the MPV started making some really weird sounds when turning, so we are going to have that checked out tomorrow, but the MPV’s time might be coming to an end.

Any suggestions on a new or used minivan?  We’d buy another MPV in a heartbeat, but they stopped manufacturing that model a few years ago.  We’ll probably look at both new and used vehicles this time, because I understand that the used market is not a buyer’s market at the moment and it makes sense to investigate new vehicle options.
