September 2010 Investment Comparison Report (+0.26%)

Oct 11, 2010 @ 08:46 am by EMS

Our Roth IRA portfolio gained 9.16% over the month of September 2010.  We beat our index of VTI by 0.26% over the month.  Over the past 4 months, our portfolio has either beat or come very close to VTI.  I’ll be making another $1,000 contribution this month, and will be purchasing the second of three planned buys of Berkshire Hathaway.

I know have enough data to show how we are doing graphically in our investments when compared with our benchmark.  I’ll be updating this graphic monthly and inserting it in with my investment posts.

September 2010 Net Worth Report (+$9,679)

September’s gain in the market translated into a pretty good month here.  We gained nearly $10,000 in net worth, and would have had it not been for a $525 depreciation write-off on our vehicles.  Our savings plan continues to chug along, with me setting aside 15% of each paycheck immediately for retirement funds and saving $150/month per child for college.  While I don’t have the numbers on me immediately, a brief glance of our spending rate looks good, with September being one of the lowest spending months of the year.  This was the first month in which we’ve had only one child in daycare, which has resulted in a decrease of about $700 monthly when compared to the summer when all three kids attended daycare.  This was the first month under our refinanced mortgage, so we should see the benefits of that in the upcoming months as well.
