April 2009 Net Worth Report (+$9,850) – New Gain Record!

May 04, 2009 @ 11:32 am by EMS

An increase of nearly $10,000 was a good way to roll into May!  With the markets help, we were able to gather almost $7,000 worth of investment gains.

As we had paid off our van last month, we decided to hop right in and purchase another vehicle.  We found a great deal on a 2007 Hyundai Elantra with only 15,000 miles on it.  Using the method that I use to calculate vehicle worth (Kelly Blue Book), the value of the vehicle is $13,860.  We were able to pick it up for about $12,000.  I’m loving the car so far.  It certainly isn’t anything fancy, but it gets me back and forth from work at an impressive 36 MPGs (an improvement of 12 MPG over the previous vehicle), plus the XM subscription on the factory-installed radio is still active!  $6,000 of the vehicle was financed at 5.25% over 3 years.  I’ll be paying down a good chunk of that once I sell my old vehicle (see below).

The dealer that we bought the car from would only give us $1,000 for our ’01 Mercury Sable with 130K miles on it, so I decided to try to put it up on eBay.  I’ve done this before with great success, effectively doubling what I would have gotten for a vehicle from the dealership.  Unfortunately, I’m not have as much luck this time.  The winner of the auction bid $1,600, but has been a total deadbeat.  I’ve come to realize that the eBay system is designed to protect buyers much more so than sellers, so I’m going to give it one more try and if it doesn’t work out, I’ll be switching to CraigsList or other more traditional routes.

Our April expenses were inline with the previous ’09 reports, so I don’t have anything extraordinary to report in that regard. It looks  like the family vacation will take place in June, so I’ll have plenty of expenses for then.
