The Wind That Blows $$$ Away…

Feb 18, 2008 @ 03:49 pm by EMS

For the first time in my life, I’ve been the victim of “Act of God” damage.  We had some decent winds last Sunday and while they weren’t the worst I’ve ever experienced, it managed to blow about 50% of the siding off of one of our walls.  Of course, the company that made our siding is no longer in business, so we’ll have to replace the entire side with as close of a match as we can find.  It looks like total damage will come in just under our $1,000 deductible, so we can say good-bye to the new carpet we wanted to install this summer.

Oh well, at least no one was hurt and it pales in comparison to hurricane or tornado victims, so I can’t complain too much.  Just something else to add to the to-do list…

January 2008 Net Worth Report (-$6,999)

And the beat down continues….

Thanks to the economic downturn, our net worth decreased just 1 dollar shy of $7,000.  Both our Roth IRAs and 401ks suffered major hits.  I’m not terribly concerned given that I’m not going to need this money (hopefully) for decades, but I”m not terribly happy about it either.  I’ll be looking this month at the portfolio and seeing if there some rebalancing that needs done.

On the positive side of things, I think our cash flow for this month has been pretty good.  Our expenses for January have been manageable, and we have a lot of cash available in case of emergency.  While I haven’t totally completed our 2007 tax return, I think we should be seeing a refund of about $4,000, which will allow us to make a major contribution to our Roth IRAs early in the year.  We should also be getting $2,100 from the special tax rebate later this year.
