Woot Off Today

Apr 26, 2007 @ 11:26 am by EMS

Woot is having a Woot Off today!  I buy an occasional item from Woot and I love watching the Woot Offs, where they sell 1 item until it sells out before moving to the next item.  The last few Woot Offs have been a bit of a disappointment, but last summer I managed to get enough components to build a pretty nice HD entertainment system in my basement for less than 1/2 of what I was planning on paying.

Prayers Going out to Virginia Tech

Apr 17, 2007 @ 11:16 am by EMS

Sometimes we focus so much on money, jobs, etc… that we forget about the important things in life. That’s how I felt yesterday because some nut-job went crazy at Virginia Tech and killed at least 30 people. This world and country have become a scary place in a lot of aspects. I guess this tragedy hit home closer than most because I visited Blacksburg not so long ago and remarked how similar it was to the area in which I live. Things like this aren’t supposed to happen in small college towns.

But what can we do to stop it? If someone goes nuts and wants a gun bad enough, he/she can get it (with our without gun control laws). I visit a lot of universities, and I generally can walk into any academic building without question, much like the shooter did. At what point do we start limiting access to “public” places? Can we do that? Should we do that? Do we stop living our lives and become cloistered in a cement basement? I don’t know and don’t have any answers.

All I know is that when I got home last night, I spent more time with my kids and told them repeatedly that I loved them. It’s days like that that almost make me feel guilty for bringing more life into this world.

I can’t imagine what the victims’ parents (or any parent of a victim of violent crime) are going through right now, but our prayers are with you.

Lowest Electric Since We Moved

Apr 09, 2007 @ 01:05 pm by EMS

Last month, I wrote about how I was in the process of migrating about 85% of the household lights to compact fluorescent (CF) bulbs. Today, I started seeing the savings. Our electricy bill came in and we used about 26% less electricity this month than what we’ve been averaging over the past 10 months (graph below shows usage). I can’t give the CF bulbs all of the credit, though. We haven’t been running the two highest electric consuming devices, our air conditioner and hot tub, over the past 3 months. However, even when compared with January and February of 2007, our electric usage has dropped close to 200 KHW.

Electric Usage

The only negative things I can say about the CF bulbs is their initial up-front costs and the 1-2 minute warm up time that some of the bulbs experience. Now that I see the numbers that we are saving and will continue to save throughout the life of the bulbs and the fact that we are making the world just a little bit greener, I’ve very happy with the purchase.

March 2007 Net Worth Report (+8,612)

Apr 02, 2007 @ 08:47 am by EMS

We went from last month’s pathetic performance to the best net worth increase ever recorded on the site! A couple things happened this month that really increased our net worth:

  • The $4,800 tax refund.
  • March was one of the months that my wife gets paid 3 times instead of the normal 2.
  • Moderate gains in the market accounted for an increase of about $800.

All in all, I’m pretty happy with this number, especially considering that March was a higher than normal expense month. We purchased a few items of furniture for the kids’ rooms and exceeded our budget slightly in both dining and gas expenses.

So far, our monthly net worth increase in 2007 has averaged about $3,800 a month. I don’t expect this number to continue, but it certainly looks good on paper. I expect April to be a fairly low increase due to local taxes and a $315 account bill due.
